The header is not optional. Address a real person whenever you can ("Dear Ms. Okafor") instead of "To Whom It May Concern." If the job post doesn't name the hiring manager, it's worth two minutes to find out — more on that near the end.

Why it works: every paragraph leads with a measurable result, names specific systems (Epic, prior auths, phlebotomy), and proves the dual clinical/admin competency that defines the role.
What to include (certifications, clinical skills, EHR)
If a recruiter can't find these signals fast, your letter reads as generic. Make them obvious.
- Certification status. Spell out where you stand: CMA (AAMA), RMA, CCMA, "scheduled to test in [month]," or "completing a CAAHEP-accredited program." The two big credentialing bodies are the AAMA (CMA) and American Medical Technologists (RMA) — name yours and the issuing body so it's verifiable.
- Clinical skills, with numbers. Vitals, phlebotomy/venipuncture, injections and immunizations, EKGs, rooming, sterilization, specimen collection. Pair them with volume or accuracy ("roomed 28/day," "99% vitals accuracy").
- Administrative skills. Scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorizations, referrals, and patient intake. Clinics want one hire who can do both.
- EHR systems by name. Epic, Cerner, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks. "Proficient in EHR" is weak; naming the system the clinic uses is strong.
- Soft skills tied to evidence. Bilingual ability, bedside manner, staying organized under high volume — but show them, don't just claim them.

Common mistakes that get cover letters skipped
- Repeating your resume line by line. The cover letter adds context and proof, not a second copy of your bullet points.
- Generic openers. "I am writing to express my interest…" wastes your strongest line. Name the role and a credential instead.
- "To Whom It May Concern." It signals you didn't look. Find the hiring manager's name.
- No numbers. "Experienced and detail-oriented" means nothing. "99% vitals accuracy across 30 patients/day" means everything.
- Going over one page. Three to four tight paragraphs. If it spills onto page two, cut.
- Typos and the wrong clinic name. In healthcare, sloppiness reads as a patient-safety risk. Proofread, and double-check the clinic name in every paragraph.
